29 Nov Celebrating the Leaders of Tomorrow
After years of involvement with nonprofits, Carolyn Meakem, the founder of The Meakem Group, realized her dream of helping to found Leadership Montgomery. A nonprofit organization devoted to creating leaders in Montgomery County who will work for the betterment of the community, Leadership Montgomery came to life in 1989 when the first Board met with Carolyn Meakem as Treasurer. Carolyn remained on the Board for nine years and was able to experience the program from a new perspective as a member the Senior Leadership Montgomery Class of 2015. She has seen Leadership Montgomery produce a vital group of leaders, youth as well as adult, who create positive change in institutions across Montgomery County.
In addition to their programs for young adults, adults established in their careers, and seniors, Leadership Montgomery offers a program for teens, called Youth Leadership Montgomery. According to the Leadership Montgomery website, “Youth Leadership Montgomery empowers students with the skills necessary to achieve success in all facets of their lives and inspires them to exercise their leadership to enhance their schools and communities. …The young leaders learn about issues in the community, the role of nonprofit organizations and the importance of civic engagement through the example of passionate leaders, as well as hands-on activities.”
Traci Richmond, President of The Meakem Group, spoke to the Youth Leadership Montgomery Class of 2016 at their graduation on November 17, 2016. She was wowed by this impressive group of future community leaders and advised them in her remarks to move outside their comfort zones in the future. The Meakem Group is a co-sponsor of the program.
